John J. York Health Update: “I Believe They Found a Match”

Some great news to report! GENERAL HOSPITAL star John J. York (Mac) reports that Be The Match was successful and he is now preparing to receive a life-saving blood stem cell transplant.

“I believe they found a match,” the actor revealed during an appearance on GOOD MORNING AMERICA on Sept. 22. “A perfect match, which will make me cry… Many of my family members were tested and most of them were six out of 12. Apparently, there’s markers that have to be reached. So they were on standby.”

York worried fans when he announced he would be taking a “brief hiatus” from GH in the near future, and later revealed that he had been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome and multiple smoldering myeloma, two blood and bone marrow disorders. He has already undergone multiple chemotherapy treatments while hoping a match could be found for a blood stem cell transplant. And now it has.

“So we’re gonna start our testing and do all that kind of stuff coming up here in about a week,” York explained. “And then I believe the transplant will happen — fingers crossed — in November. It’s a big deal. It’s the biggest deal.”

The veteran actor struggled to find the words when asked what he would say to this donor who is giving such a tremendous gift. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Thank you for saving my life. For letting me spend more time with my wife, my daughter, my son-in-law, my grandchildren. Seeing the beautiful blue sky and all the beautiful trees. That’s what I would say.”

York is keeping a positive attitude throughout this battle and did his online interview with GMA from the GH set, so he is still working as he prepares for the transplant. Please join us in wishing him all the best for a successful operation and a speedy recovery!
